The Mangnus family

Three generations - one farm

To this day the farm combines three branches on one yard: arable crops, fruit tree rootstocks — a large share of them organic — and veal calves. That broad base keeps us strong and keeps the work moving all year round.

What started as an arable farm in Biddinghuizen has grown into a specialised nursery for fruit tree rootstocks — both conventional and organic. The fertile young sea clay of Eastern Flevoland was, and still is, the foundation under everything that grows here.

Mangnus Boomkwekerijen is today led by Patrick Mangnus, together with his wife Annelies and son Ward. Three generations of Mangnus have shaped the business: from founder Eduard senior to grandson Ward, who is helping to define its future.

From field to rootstock

Forty years of Mangnus, in milestones.

  1. 1985

    The first stool beds

    Eduard Mangnus sr. and his sons Patrick and Paul plant 1.5 ha of M9 rootstock in Biddinghuizen. The virus-free, dwarfing rootstock is hugely popular across Europe at the time — and turns out to be a perfect fit for the arable farm. By the late 1980s, manual winter harvest and February sorting turn the quiet season into a productive one, and the stool bed is doubled to 3 ha.

  2. 1995

    Leap to Swifterbant

    A second arable farm in Swifterbant is acquired. Father Eduard steps back, Paul continues the family arable farm in Biddinghuizen, Patrick takes on both the nursery and Swifterbant.

  3. 2009

    New yard, new ambition

    The arrival of the Hanzelijn railway forces a relocation. On the new site a complete new yard is built: modern storage shed, calf barn and a processing area with cold storage for the rootstocks.

  4. 2015

    Organic takes root

    In the years that follow, Patrick becomes one of the first growers in his field to produce organic fruit tree rootstocks. The farm increasingly takes shape as three branches on one yard: nursery, arable and veal calves. Organic rootstocks in particular become a key part of the business, with a focus on quality, healthy growth and sustainable cultivation.

  5. 2026

    Family at the helm

    Patrick, Annelies and son Ward run the business together. 48 ha of arable, 18 ha of rootstocks (8 ha organic) and 435 veal calves — ready for the next generation.
